One of the problems that shrink wrapped boats have is with mold so I left a gap in the cockpit and the stem of the boat so that there would be good airflow through the boat. Fresh on my mind was having to clean my new bimini from the trash left by a dove's nest so I filled these gaps with bird netting.<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UC05_oKqi4I/YPcROm4NdQI/AAAAAAABHeA/8CtGswv402kEQohwbJJ4L3X2aJozaF70QCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/PXL_20210720_170437399.MP.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UC05_oKqi4I/YPcROm4NdQI/AAAAAAABHeA/8CtGswv402kEQohwbJJ4L3X2aJozaF70QCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/PXL_20210720_170437399.MP.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>Hopefully the gales of November will treat her kindly.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IomZJ9e2G7Y/YPcf_LR_THI/AAAAAAABHeM/OHJibx1H3ZMjqgKLsswW0XgR0J8Oi2ppACLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/PXL_20210720_190930853.NIGHT.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IomZJ9e2G7Y/YPcf_LR_THI/AAAAAAABHeM/OHJibx1H3ZMjqgKLsswW0XgR0J8Oi2ppACLcBGAsYHQ/s320/PXL_20210720_190930853.NIGHT.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>Onapuahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07501898616396408918noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8590757788974505886.post-45111511535683314632021-07-17T23:03:00.004-04:002021-07-20T14:13:52.610-04:00Winter cover 2 of 3<p> I'm still working on my winter cover and today I managed to get the reinforced plastic over the front half of the boat.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3APZ6ClPg58/YPOWp8ym7bI/AAAAAAABHOA/UyWi7jm3VUIw3B0v6DYu03gSzwl063uBwCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/PXL_20210717_235435557.MP.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3APZ6ClPg58/YPOWp8ym7bI/AAAAAAABHOA/UyWi7jm3VUIw3B0v6DYu03gSzwl063uBwCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/PXL_20210717_235435557.MP.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>Again lots of details here including going around the mast.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MuPL1BU9fN0/YPOXWmnhAAI/AAAAAAABHOI/0jFldKrfK9UfRvUpxgO-Wx0qZ1TzvQymQCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/PXL_20210717_235528447.MP.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MuPL1BU9fN0/YPOXWmnhAAI/AAAAAAABHOI/0jFldKrfK9UfRvUpxgO-Wx0qZ1TzvQymQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/PXL_20210717_235528447.MP.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>If you look closely at the lhs of the next photo, you will see the forward lower stay poking through the plastic. When I get to the mast I will split the plastic so I will have 2 layers of plastic sheeting forward of the mast.</p>Onapuahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07501898616396408918noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8590757788974505886.post-40970196529201194512021-07-15T20:04:00.002-04:002021-07-20T14:13:33.828-04:00Winter Cover 1 of 3<p>Up to this year, I have balked at spending several thousand dollars on inside storage or for shrink wrap instead choosing tarpaulins to keep the snow off the boat. This year however, I am trying a new tack, using reinforced plastic that is used in the construction industry to protect workers on scaffolding.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-k8Zvv_jY9pk/YPDIFCZMbMI/AAAAAAABHKc/Rv4btL8b2OYaIWc8pO2S0sML6MbKKIahACLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/PXL_20210715_232729099.MP.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-k8Zvv_jY9pk/YPDIFCZMbMI/AAAAAAABHKc/Rv4btL8b2OYaIWc8pO2S0sML6MbKKIahACLcBGAsYHQ/s320/PXL_20210715_232729099.MP.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>I got 20x50 feet for $60. </p><p>So I had to build a frame. I used 30 PVC conduit pipes (schedule 40) that comes in 10 foot lengths for $5 each. I then attached them to a wooden strip along the bulwarks. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UXgikouCOgg/YPDJzOAsUqI/AAAAAAABHKk/fuTjaeYJ8lY266smEMHXod7k2s2vHb1OACLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/PXL_20210715_181914474.MP.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UXgikouCOgg/YPDJzOAsUqI/AAAAAAABHKk/fuTjaeYJ8lY266smEMHXod7k2s2vHb1OACLcBGAsYHQ/s320/PXL_20210715_181914474.MP.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>BTW, the photo shows the red bottom paint that I applied last week.</p><p><br /></p><p>You can see the attachment in better detail here.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ofsR27yAQUQ/YPDKumJGIxI/AAAAAAABHKs/ublG5pOlzZIn_U27TU8Pb4FuNixem_PxgCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/PXL_20210714_173014333.MP.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ofsR27yAQUQ/YPDKumJGIxI/AAAAAAABHKs/ublG5pOlzZIn_U27TU8Pb4FuNixem_PxgCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/PXL_20210714_173014333.MP.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>Also I haven't shown a photo with the new topside paint, so here it is.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-62WiDaUP3Cg/YPDLesEi9jI/AAAAAAABHK4/xmVlMvAZm64tGlWpzO6AUDdIdKVrRSfmwCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/PXL_20210714_172344134.MP.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-62WiDaUP3Cg/YPDLesEi9jI/AAAAAAABHK4/xmVlMvAZm64tGlWpzO6AUDdIdKVrRSfmwCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/PXL_20210714_172344134.MP.jpg" /></a></div><br /><p>I am slowly getting around to making her shipshape again. I did try to start the engine today without any joy. The batteries are not cooperating. I did do a little bit of trouble shooting and found that the batteries are okay so it appears that a have a connection problem on the starboard side. My diesel looks black inside my racor filter too so that is another issue to deal with. You have heard of project creep no doubt. Both landlubbers and sailors are very familiar with the term. So I am on my boat, trying to get ready to splash her and one of the first problems I run into after filling up the water tanks, is that the foot pump in the galley is not pumping water. So that means that I cannot empty the tanks to get rid of the antifreeze that I put in them to winterize them from back in the fall. So I ordered a new tiptoe whale foot pump from Defender but it is not due here for a few days. Meanwhile I decided to try and empty the water tanks with my 12 volt water pump. Well it did not work. Story of my life. I tried messing with the electrical connectors but they were all rusted and no matter how much I tried to coax the pump into life, it wouldn't budge. So I stopped by AutoZone and bought a cigarette lighter plug and then onto Harbor freight for the pump. Stay tuned.<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--y5A3BsxRxY/YOYsKzG1odI/AAAAAAABHB4/_5i96_0U7i07TKntrcnoIuq3lx09jTZlwCPcBGAsYHg/s4032/PXL_20210707_223455251.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--y5A3BsxRxY/YOYsKzG1odI/AAAAAAABHB4/_5i96_0U7i07TKntrcnoIuq3lx09jTZlwCPcBGAsYHg/s320/PXL_20210707_223455251.jpg" /></a></div><br /><p>Okay so here is the finished product. Nothing ever works out the way you plan it. The new 12 volt plug had a blown fuse so I ended up cannibalizing the old one.</p>Onapuahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07501898616396408918noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8590757788974505886.post-65416388416266616192021-07-07T15:58:00.004-04:002021-07-07T16:53:03.534-04:00Sailboat Graveyard<p>Pssst....do you want to know a secret? Sailing has come to an end for me this year but on my way out of Australia, I passed through Brisbane and had a chance to swing by the museum on the Brisbane river downtown near the South Bank. Some great old boats reside there including the HMAS Diamantina, a WW2 frigate built in 1945.Onapuahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07501898616396408918noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8590757788974505886.post-85798161018106525452019-08-02T17:38:00.002-04:002019-08-02T17:38:46.266-04:00Mackay Australia<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Look closely at the photo and you may notice the tide change. It's huge here at about 25 feet and it gets a whole lot more the further you travel north.<br />

We actually arrived here Thursday but after 7 days at sea, my favorite beverage and a long hot shower was a top priority.Onapuahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07501898616396408918noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8590757788974505886.post-44732584935323496272019-08-01T20:38:00.000-04:002019-08-01T20:38:47.367-04:00Emergency at seaOn Saturday evening our neighboring boat captain, Glen on a Canadian boat called Denicia, called us on the VHF radio to say that he was having heart problems with a severe chest pain. This was in the middle of the Coral Sea, 500 nautical miles from the nearest land. We used our satellite phone to talk to Australian search and rescue which culminated in a plane coming out to visit us the following evening at dusk. They dropped 2 heavy barrels with medication and a satellite phone attached to a 400 metre rope. Originally it was thought that Glen had strained a back muscle but after talking with a doctor he came to the terrible conclusion that he would require blood thinning medicine.<br />

Here we are, tied up downtown next to the wharf. We actually anchored in the bay just north of here last night, called Hannah harbor so this morning we awoke early and motored 20 nautical miles against the prevailing SE trade winds to get here. After hosing all the salt off the boat and cleaning Alora up, I went for a run north alongside the coast got a feel for the city. It's very commercial here with lots of tourists, souvenir shops, atm machines, cafes and currency exchange places along the pot holed Street.Onapuahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07501898616396408918noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8590757788974505886.post-76894430765276338822019-07-19T16:15:00.000-04:002019-07-19T16:15:40.402-04:00Tanna to Port Vila.Sailed up to Port Vila over night and we are going to rest up today out side the harbor before going in tomorrow.<br />

Then we have a 450 nautical mile sailing race to Vanuatu west of here. The forecast is for perfect 15-20 knot SE winds initially dying to variable Monday, and there is a huge penalty if we end up turning on the engine. There are 22 boats leaving here and there are 6 other boats in our category. Most are not interested in competition, at least that is what they say!Onapuahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07501898616396408918noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8590757788974505886.post-67055430901879812192019-07-11T23:44:00.000-04:002019-07-11T23:44:09.299-04:00Musket Cove Marina<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

There are 22 boats here in Fiji with us getting ready to sail to Vanuatu at 10am tomorrow morning as part of the ARC around the world rally. There are 25 legs of the rally that are actually races and this next leg over to Tanna will be light winds without using the engine. Should be interesting!Onapuahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07501898616396408918noreply@blogger.com0
